Try from Admin area:
Ad Manager + Header + Edit
and activate.

You need to click 'Add new' banner zone then insert the new zone into [file]header.php[/file].

Or, you can open [file]header.php[/file] and add your banner directly into the [file]header.php[/file] file.

can you please tell me what you did?
i am trying to place a jpg file on the left side of the page alongside the categories.

I created a new ad in ad manager and gave the path /templates/images/image1.jpg

after that DO I need to edit the header.tpl file?
